Screening for Psi

No business is able to prepare itself for the side-effects of anti-structure…

The merits of psi in an environment in which predictability is paramount are few; process outcomes become uncertain and this is especially so in an environment in which instability may already be perceived. For example, any modern factory that employs temporary labor will be at risk of enduring a lasting instability that is the child of an unmanageable commingling of unlike languages, cultures and races; structure in such a factory will be difficult, if not impossible, to enforce, as a common sense of mission cannot be evenly wrought by language. Into such an environment, psi makes an unnoticed entrance.

Psi rarely finds fertile ground for its expression, and so is successfully suppressed in its host; if the host proactively chooses to engage in and be engaged by enterprises that are predictable, he will not vector disharmony; he, like the business, relies on structure that is conscientiously managed. But anti-structure will emerge when no longer emphasis is placed on the regularity, sometimes deemed too costly, on which structure depends — labor costs increase, and a business ripe for psi is born in the bargain struck in an effort to grow margins.

Psi thrives, very often at the expense of its host, when structure is compromised; it will feed on the interstitial characteristics of a temporary workforce beset by rapid turnover and will exacerbate the mounting institutional discontent arising from barriers of custom and language. A space betwixt company mission and human capital opens, and psi readily fills the vacuum. No business is able to prepare itself for the side-effects of anti-structure and the symptoms of active psi, unless it has a Shaman in retainer, which is doubtful.
